Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, straightforward answers about how recovery coaching works and what to expect. Whether you’re seeking help for yourself or a loved one, here’s how to take the next step with confidence.

Coaching Journey

What is a Recovery Coach?

Unlike therapy and counseling, recovery coaching is a non-clinical peer modality that walks beside you, helping you navigate challenges, rediscover clarity, and choose the recovery path that feels right for you.

What’s the difference between a recovery coach and a sponsor?

A sponsor is a volunteer within a 12-step fellowship who guides you through that program’s steps. A recovery coach is a trained, credentialed professional who works with any pathway you choose, whether that includes a 12-step program or not, and focuses on your whole life: goals, relationships, and practical next steps. Many people have both.

Family Coaching Journey

How do I set boundaries without pushing my loved one away?

Boundaries protect the relationship as much as they protect you. Coaching helps you find language that is clear and loving at the same time, so the boundary lands as care, not punishment. Learn more under the Family Coaching Journey on the Services page.

How do I take care of myself while supporting someone in recovery?

Deliberately. Supporting a loved one is emotionally heavy work, and running on empty helps no one. Coaching makes room for your own rest, healing, and resilience alongside the support you give. You matter in this journey too.

Intervention

What does an interventionist do?

A professional interventionist prepares and guides the conversation where a family invites their loved one to accept help. Most of the work happens before anyone gathers: understanding the family, planning the conversation, and lining up the path forward. Damien is a Certified Intervention Professional. Learn more on the Intervention page.

How does an intervention work?

See the full walkthrough on the Intervention page. In short: a confidential consultation, careful family preparation, a guided conversation grounded in love, and follow-through support whatever your loved one decides.

Chronic Pain Coaching

What is chronic pain coaching?

Chronic pain coaching is non-clinical peer support for people living with persistent pain. It draws on modern pain science showing that the brain can unlearn pain it has learned, and it walks beside you as you rebuild daily life: steady attention to sensations, the stress and emotional load that feed pain, pacing, and the activities pain has taken from you. It works alongside your medical care, never in place of it.

Can chronic pain really improve after years of hurting?

For many people, yes. In a randomized trial at the University of Colorado Boulder published in JAMA Psychiatry, two thirds of people with chronic back pain were pain free or nearly pain free after a month of retraining how their brain interpreted pain, and follow-up research found those gains held for years. Learn more in Chronic Pain Coaching on the Services page.

Will coaching replace my doctor or pain specialist?

No. Coaching complements medical care and never replaces it. Keep your care team; coaching helps you get more from it, with clearer communication, steadier follow-through, and support between appointments.

Working Together

How does this work?

We start with a phone call to see if we’re a good fit to work together. If we decide to move forward, we schedule our first session. If possible, we can meet in person in NYC, otherwise we will meet over video conference.

Will our meetings be confidential?

Your privacy is of the utmost importance. Reilly Recovery follows HIPAA guidelines when it comes to client confidentiality.

Do you only work with people in NYC?

No. Sessions happen in person in NYC or virtually anywhere in the United States. Coaching over video works the same way it does in the room: same conversations, same support, same pace set by you.

Cost and Insurance

Do you take insurance?

Unfortunately, the coaching modality is typically not covered by insurance companies. However, because this is an out of pocket expense, I work on a sliding scale based on your income. Please reach out to inquire about cost.
